President Donald Trump is leaning toward expanding U.S. military operations in Iran after several days of briefings from senior aides, according to U.S. officials cited by The Wall Street Journal.

The options include increased airstrikes, ground forces to seize Iranian islands near the Strait of Hormuz, and a strike on a fortified nuclear-linked site.

What options is Trump considering in Iran?

The options include additional airstrikes, deploying U.S. ground forces to seize Kharg Island and other territory along the Strait of Hormuz, and bombing a fortified tunnel complex at Pickaxe Mountain.

Trump discussed these options during a meeting in the White House Situation Room on Tuesday evening, the Journal reported. Energy facilities across Iran also remain under consideration as additional airstrike targets.

What is Pickaxe Mountain?

Pickaxe Mountain is a fortified tunnel complex linked to Iran's nuclear program that the United States has not yet targeted, according to the report. Officials discussed bombing the site as part of the broader package of options presented to Trump.

The site is considered significant because it could be used for covert nuclear-related work.

Why does the Strait of Hormuz matter?

The Strait of Hormuz sits between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula and ranks among the world's most important maritime routes for energy shipments. Trump said earlier this week that the strait was open and under U.S. control. By Wednesday, however, ship-tracking firm Kpler reported that traffic through the waterway had declined as risks to shipping increased.

Could ground troops be deployed to Iran?

Analysts and former military officers have raised concerns that securing the strait and reassuring commercial shipping companies could require either a naval escort mission or a large-scale ground operation in southern Iran.

Convincing shippers it is safe to transit without Iran's consent is seen as the central challenge. Such options would likely require a significant commitment of U.S. military personnel and carry substantial risks, according to those assessments.
