Tawazun Council for Defense Enablement and AD Ports Group have announced a strategic partnership to develop the Al Selmiyyah Defense Industrial Free Zone in Abu Dhabi, according to the state-run WAM news agency.
The project aims to build a sustainable national defense industrial base, strengthen national security and improve long-term defense readiness.
What is the Al Selmiyyah Defense Industrial Free Zone in Abu Dhabi?
The Al Selmiyyah Defense Industrial Free Zone is a dedicated manufacturing zone in Abu Dhabi, developed through a partnership between Tawazun Council and AD Ports Group.
It is designed to attract global original equipment manufacturers, localize defense production and expand the UAE's long-term industrial capabilities through specialized infrastructure and integrated logistics networks.
What will the free zone offer defense companies?
The zone will function as an integrated industrial ecosystem, giving global defense companies a purpose-built environment to establish operations in the UAE.
It is designed to promote partnerships that link domestic capabilities with international expertise. The development will also strengthen supply chains, boost export readiness and advance broader industrial development goals.
Authorities say the free zone will help position the UAE as a global hub for advanced defense manufacturing while contributing to economic growth and national industrial priorities.
The project will include specialized infrastructure, regulatory frameworks and compliance standards. It will also connect to logistics networks and global supply chains to support exports and strategic industries.
What roles will Tawazun and AD Ports play in the project?
Under the agreement, Tawazun will oversee regulatory and licensing frameworks, align the project with national defense priorities and manage industrial compliance systems.
AD Ports Group will serve as a strategic partner and advisor, leading master planning, infrastructure and land use design. The group will also support phased development and connectivity to regional and global trade networks.
Dr Nasser Humaid Al Nuaimi, secretary-general of Tawazun Council for Defense Enablement, described the initiative as a strategic milestone in building a national defense industrial ecosystem. He said the project aims to attract global manufacturers, support technology transfer and accelerate growth in the UAE's defense sector.
How does the free zone support UAE defense and economic goals?
Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, managing director and group CEO of AD Ports Group, said the partnership aligns with the country's broader vision to strengthen its position as a hub for advanced industries.
He added that the free zone would expand the group's portfolio and support high-value sectors through integrated infrastructure and logistics.
Officials said the project is expected to support technology transfer, expand investment opportunities and increase participation of national companies and small and medium-sized enterprises in defense supply chains.
The initiative is also intended to strengthen industrial sovereignty and support the UAE's wider goals in high-tech manufacturing and strategic industries.
