UAE defines global AI policy with focus on ethics, security and innovation
The UAE’s official AI stance advocates for international cooperation, responsible development, and leveraging AI for societal well-being and economic growth.
The UAE Cabinet has approved the country's official stance on global artificial intelligence (AI) policy, outlining how AI should be used and setting its goals and priorities, according to WAM.
The UAE’s position emphasizes the importance of supporting international regulations that hold nations accountable for developing AI tools that could cause harm or destabilization.
It also advocates for the creation of global alliances to govern, secure, and advance AI systems. Additionally, the policy promotes responsible AI usage through research and development initiatives aimed at fostering peace and stability, while ensuring security, privacy, and data protection.
"Technological advancements should be aligned with improving societal well-being," said Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications. "The UAE has emerged as a key player in shaping global AI governance, contributing to international discussions and helping establish the standards that will guide AI's future."
The policy also seeks to harness AI to drive economic diversification and innovation, with a focus on developing high-impact technological solutions.
The UAE’s AI policy is built on six foundational principles: advancement, cooperation, community, ethics, sustainability, and security.These principles reflect the country’s commitment to ensuring that AI development aligns with ethical, social, and environmental goals.
Omran Sharaf, Assistant Foreign Minister for Advanced Science and Technology, noted that these policies enhance the UAE's leadership in AI development. "By aligning our foreign policy with global AI standards, we empower local stakeholders, including private companies and research institutions, to address AI challenges on a global scale," Sharaf said.
