Four universities in the United Arab Emirates secured spots in the top 500 of the QS World University Rankings 2025, reflecting the country’s steady progress in higher education,

Khaleej Times reported that United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) climbed 29 places to 261st globally, while Khalifa University moved up 28 spots to 202nd. The American University of Sharjah advanced 32 places to rank 332nd, and the University of Sharjah rose 31 places to claim the 434th position.

University rankings play a crucial role in students' selection of institutions and guide policymakers in shaping education strategies. The QS World University Rankings serve as a global benchmark for allocating resources and directing funding to higher education.

A new Arthur D. Little (ADL) report, Enhancing University Rankings to Support Human Capital Development, analyzes the key drivers behind rising university rankings and how Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries can further strengthen their higher education systems.

Key factors influencing rankings

The report outlines four critical pillars shaping university rankings: teaching quality, research impact, international outlook, and industry engagement.

“This year’s rankings confirm what we have long anticipated—UAE universities are rapidly gaining global recognition due to sustained investment in education, research, and international partnerships,” said Yigit Saf, principal at Arthur D. Little Middle East.

The UAE has made significant strides in recent years, aligning higher education growth with its national strategies. The report highlights steps institutions can take to sustain momentum, including improving faculty training, modernizing curricula, and prioritizing high-impact research.

Expanding international collaborations, attracting top faculty, and developing student exchange programs can also enhance global integration. Industry partnerships remain key, with universities focusing on corporate collaborations, patents, and market-driven research to improve graduate employability and national economic growth.

“To sustain this momentum, universities must understand their strengths and gaps across the four strategic pillars and design tailored strategies to bridge the divide between education and labor market needs,” said Amr Kazimi, senior manager at Arthur D. Little Middle East. “Investing in world-class faculty and fostering interdisciplinary innovation will be critical in ensuring UAE universities become globally recognized knowledge hubs.”

Global success stories

The report cites international examples of universities that have successfully climbed global rankings through targeted reforms. Spain’s IE University (IEU) enhanced its international standing by attracting a diverse faculty and student body, supported by government-backed scholarships and streamlined visa policies.

In industry collaboration, Purdue University’s partnership with Rolls-Royce reshaped its engineering curriculum to align with employer needs, strengthening ties between academia and industry. Similarly, the National University of Singapore (NUS) established the Centre for Future-ready Graduates (CFG) to bridge the gap between education and employment through internships and direct employer engagement.

Research-driven institutions like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have demonstrated the value of interdisciplinary collaboration, leveraging high-impact publications and technology-driven innovation hubs to maintain global leadership.

The report suggests UAE universities can adopt similar strategies, integrating industry-backed research and global partnerships to further enhance their rankings and solidify their role as regional innovation drivers.
