The United Arab Emirates has widened its investigation into the publication and circulation of a false news report claiming explosions were heard in central Dubai, the Khaleej Times reported.
UAE Attorney-General Counsellor Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi said the Public Prosecution is continuing its inquiry into the report.
What is the UAE investigating over the false Dubai explosions report?
The Public Prosecution is examining the publication and circulation of a false report that claimed explosions had occurred in central Dubai.
Al Shamsi said investigators have recorded the reporter's statement and summoned those responsible for preparing, approving and publishing the report at the news agency involved. The inquiry aims to determine responsibility and decide on legal action based on its findings.
What will the investigation look into?
The investigation will examine each individual's role in the report's publication, along with the editorial procedures the news agency followed. It will also assess whether legal and professional standards for verifying information were observed before the report was published.
Al Shamsi said the process is designed to establish accountability at every stage of the report's production.
Does the news agency's apology affect the investigation?
Al Shamsi said the news agency's decision to withdraw the report and issue a public apology would not affect the ongoing investigation. He said the Public Prosecution will continue working to establish legal accountability and determine any measures required under UAE law. The withdrawal and apology are treated as separate from the question of legal responsibility.
