The International Energy Agency says simple changes in daily habits — from working remotely to driving more efficiently — can significantly reduce fuel consumption and help households and businesses cope with rising energy costs.

In a recent report, the agency detailed 10 practical measures aimed at lowering oil demand and easing pressure on fuel supplies during the ongoing global energy shock.

“Governments can take the lead, both by setting an example and by facilitating these actions, but many can be adopted by individuals and businesses directly,” the IEA said.

Everyday actions can cut fuel use

Among the most effective steps is working from home. The IEA said adding just three remote workdays per week, where possible, could reduce national oil consumption from cars by up to 6%, while individual drivers could see reductions of around 20%.

The agency also emphasized slower driving. “Lowering the speed limit on highways by 10 km/h can reduce an individual driver’s oil consumption by 5% to 10%,” it said.

Shifting from private cars to public transport, as well as walking or cycling for shorter distances, can further reduce fuel demand. Measures like carpooling, alternating car use on certain days and adopting efficient driving practices can also contribute to savings.

Beyond roads: flights, cooking and industry

The IEA said reducing air travel, especially for business, could have a major impact. “A reduction of around 40% of flights taken for business purposes is feasible in the short term,” it noted, adding that this could cut jet fuel demand by up to 15%.

As LPG supplies tighten, the agency also suggested switching to alternative cooking methods, including electric options, where possible.

For industries, improving efficiency and optimizing operations can reduce oil use by up to 5%, helping ease pressure on energy systems.

The IEA stressed that while governments play a key role in enabling these changes, individuals and businesses can act immediately.

The report underscores a simple message: small, practical steps taken at scale can help reduce fuel consumption, lower costs and cushion the impact of global energy disruptions.
