World’s largest mosaic artwork: Zayed and Rashid Mural unveiled in Hatta

The world's largest mosaic art installation has been unveiled in Hatta, paying tribute to the memory of the UAE’s founding fathers, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

Created by Brand Dubai, the creative arm of the Government of Dubai Media Office, in collaboration with the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), the Zayed and Rashid Mural has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest mosaic artwork globally, according to WAM.

The project is part of the #ZayedAndRashid campaign and aligns with the UAE's national celebrations, spanning from Flag Day on November 3 to the 53rd Eid Al Etihad on December 2.

The 2,198.7-square-meter mural adorns the slope of the Hatta Dam Waterfalls, recreating a historic photograph of the founding fathers from the UAE's formation era.

It is a centerpiece of the Dubai Street Museum initiative, launched in 2016 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai. The initiative aims to celebrate Dubai’s cultural identity, history, and aspirations through striking public art installations.

Russian artist Sergey Korbasov led the project, supported by a team of over 100 artisans from around the world. Over four months, they handcrafted the mural using 1.2 million mosaic tiles, each measuring 5 x 5 cm.

The artwork incorporates natural materials, such as rocks and soil from the Hatta region, to blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment and highlight local heritage.

Set against the breathtaking Hajar Mountains, the mural’s design is further enhanced by a cascading waterfall.

The vibrant color palette draws inspiration from the traditional attire of Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid, infusing the piece with historical and emotional significance.
