These songs not only express solidarity but also compel listeners to confront the realities faced by Palestinians today, sparking conversations and donations towards humanitarian aid.
Here are songs that were released during the Gaza-Israel war, showing solidarity and calling for peace in Palestine.
MACKLEMORE - HIND'S HALL
Rapper Macklemore's latest track is inspired by pro-Palestinian student rallies at US universities. The title references Columbia University students renaming Hamilton Hall to honor six-year-old Palestinian Hind Rajab, who was killed in the war.
Macklemore connects the war to broader generational, racial, and class struggles. He criticizes US politicians, tech companies, and law enforcement for silencing a generation increasingly aware of their rights.
“You see, we sell fear around the land of the free, but this generation here is about to cut the strings. You can ban TikTok, take us out of the algorithm. But it's too late, we've seen the truth, we bear witness.”
Macklemore has pledged to donate all proceeds from the track to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees. In addition, he is performing on October 4, 2024, in Dubai.
Elyanna - Olive Branch
The Palestinian-Chilean singer moved the audience to tears while performing the song during the opening ceremony of Egypt's El Gouna Film Festival earlier this year.
The sparse ballad speaks of the helplessness of those watching the tragedy unfold from afar.
Eddy Mack Ft. Batata - The Sound Of War
Eddy Mack is a US-based Jordanian artist. He is well-known for his powerful and socially-conscious music, particularly focusing on the struggles and rights of the Palestinian people. His latest release "The Sound of War," with Tiktoker and music creator Abu Batata, addresses the ongoing war in Palestine, expressing frustration over the injustices faced by Palestinians and criticizing biased media coverage. Mack’s work emphasizes the suffering and resilience of the Palestinian people, advocating for justice and solidarity.
Mustafa - Gaza is Calling
Sudanese-American singer and poet Mustafa wrote the song in 2020, but it was re-released during the Gaza war as a charity single benefiting the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund.
Featuring nostalgic Arabic strings, it reflects on his childhood friendship with a Palestinian boy in Toronto.
“And Gaza is calling, it’s been years since you’ve been back, you can’t keep what’s in your hands , and Gaza is calling, every time I say your name, there’s a wall that’s in the way,” Mustafa sings.
The music video, directed by Succession actress Hiam Abbas, features Palestinian figures, including supermodel Bella Hadid and Gaza rapper MC Abdul.
Seth Staton Watkins - Oh Palestine, Oh Palestine
An American folk singer has crafted a song about Palestine in the style of a traditional Irish rebel tune.
"Oh Palestine, Oh Palestine" by Seth Staton Watkins might not fit the mold of typical protest songs, but it delivers a powerful message as it recounts the history of Palestine since 1948.
In his accompanying note, Watkins explained that he felt compelled to write the song in response to the rising death toll in the conflict: “I have seen footage that I cannot unsee and I weep for the martyrs and all those still suffering.”
Lauren Jauregui - The Day The World Blows Up
American singer-songwriter and former Fifth Harmony member Lauren Jauregui released a song, "The Day The World Blows Up" on January 29, 2024, in support of Palestinian children amid the Gaza war.
Initially released exclusively on “Even.biz” for $3 in December, a portion of the profits was dedicated to the Middle East Children's Alliance (MECA) and Food Against Hunger's fund for Sudanese families in Egypt.
Written by Jauregui, Mattius, Money Jezus, and Stan Greene, the song is an ode to those who strive for a better world amidst chaos. Jauregui expressed that the song reflects her feelings about the state of the world and hope for collective resilience.
On social media, she emphasized the song's purpose and the importance of supporting children in Palestine and Sudan, urging fans to share and listen. She highlighted the need to shift focus from trivial issues to significant global crises, hoping the song could inspire and heal.
Nader Khan - War And Peace
Canadian singer and former Dubai resident Nader Khan questions the morality of war in this stirring track. Featuring minimal instrumentation, the largely percussive song examines how the conflict erases notions of justice as more Palestinians lose their lives each day.
Kehlani - Next 2 U
The music video for Next 2 U was released at the end of May in support of Palestinians. The video featured national symbols of Palestinian heritage and culture explicitly. The video song has almost reached 4M views on YouTube only.
Before releasing the album, Kehlani published a post on instagram dedicating the work to the Palestinian children who have been killed since October 7, 2023, stating that the production team tried to scroll all their names in the video but the list exceeded three minutes. However, the full list of deceased children was attached in the caption.
