Abu Dhabi has launched the Sahel Rating System, a mandatory accessibility assessment designed to improve inclusivity in buildings and public spaces, according to the Abu Dhabi media office.

The Department of Municipalities and Transport introduced the initiative following a one-year pilot phase. It will first apply to new developments, with plans to extend to existing structures.

Named after the Arabic word for "ease", Sahel aims to create a barrier-free environment for senior citizens, pregnant women, nursing mothers, children, and individuals with temporary or situational mobility challenges.

The system categorizes buildings and spaces into three classifications: Sahel Community Rating for master-planned developments and communities, Sahel Public Realm Rating for public spaces and open areas, and Sahel Building Rating for commercial, public, and government buildings.

Each category is rated at four levels: Accessible, Adaptable, Inclusive, and Exemplar, setting clear benchmarks for mobility and accessibility.

The system will be rolled out in three phases. The Design Stage involves compliance verification through the Department of Municipalities and Transport’s approval processes, reported Khaleej Times.

The Construction Stage includes audits to ensure alignment with approved designs. The Operational Stage requires reviews every five years, with updated certifications based on evaluations.

Dr. Saif Sultan Al Nasri, acting undersecretary at the Department of Municipalities and Transport, said the Sahel is a key step toward making Abu Dhabi more inclusive.

"The Sahel Rating System is a pivotal part of our efforts to enhance navigability and create a more inclusive emirate. By introducing this system, we are reinforcing our commitment to ensuring that every individual, regardless of their abilities, can easily engage with the spaces around them," he said.

The initiative aligns with the UAE’s broader accessibility goals and supports the Year of Community, aiming to enhance the quality of life across the emirate.
