Abu Dhabi woman gives birth to quintuplets
Quintuplet pregnancies are extremely rare, only occurring in roughly one in 45 to 60 million pregnancies.
Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) in Abu Dhabi announced the extraordinary delivery of five newborns from a single quintuplet pregnancy. The achievement represents a significant milestone in neonatal care for the UAE, as all five babies, born at just 25 weeks of gestation, were successfully delivered and later discharged home in good health.
“High-order pregnancies carry significant maternal risks and should only be managed in a specialized tertiary obstetrical center where all ancillary services are available. We take pride in having all the necessary expertise here to ensure the best possible outcomes for both mother and baby,” said Dr. Muhieddine Seoud, chair of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at SSMC, a subsidiary of the PureHealth group.
A team of 45 medical professionals, including nine neonatologists, four obstetricians, and 10 neonatal intensive care nurses, participated in the delivery. The emergency Caesarean section was performed without complications.
Birth at 25 weeks is classified as extremely premature, and each of the quintuplets required immediate, intensive medical care due to their exceptionally low birth weights, which ranged from 588 to 801 grams.
The mother was discharged after one week, while the quintuplets stayed in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) before joining her at home. The family is now receiving regular follow-up care at SSMC’s outpatient clinic, supported by the hospital’s pediatric and multidisciplinary teams.
