It all began when a foreign tourist posted a video alleging that Luxus Hunza Hotel was dumping sewage into Attabad Lake.
The video went viral and within days, the administration sprang into action. A section of the hotel was sealed, a hefty Rs. 1.5 million fine was issued, and hotel inspections kicked off across the region.
While an official report later found no evidence of sewage discharge, blaming the murky water on natural glacial runoff, the crackdown had already begun. Several hotels have since been fined or sealed for SOP violations.
Whether sparked by a viral post or local outrage, this sudden enforcement wave might just be the reset Gilgit-Baltistan’s tourism and environmental standards urgently needed.
