Former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood has taken charge as the acting head coach of the national cricket team.
As per the PCB’s official announcement, Mahmood will hold this position until his current contract concludes. He had agreed to a two-year term with the PCB in April 2024 and is now tasked with guiding Pakistan’s red-ball setup.
Mahmood, who previously held the role of assistant head coach, is well-acquainted with the team environment, making him a dependable and recognizable presence in the dressing room.
"A seasoned cricketing mind, Azhar Mahmood steps into the role with an impressive portfolio of experience," the PCB statement read.
"Having served as the assistant head coach of the national side, Mahmood has long been a pivotal part of the team’s strategic core. His deep knowledge of the game, combined with hands-on international exposure and proven success in the English county circuit, make him exceptionally well-suited for this position.
"His red-ball pedigree is underscored by two County Championship titles—an achievement that speaks volumes about his leadership, tactical acumen and unwavering commitment to excellence.”
Before this appointment, former Pakistan pacer Aaqib Javed had been acting as the interim red-ball coach after Australian Jason Gillespie stepped down from the role late last year.
Mahmood’s immediate challenge will be to prepare the team for their next assignment in the new ICC World Test Championship cycle (2025–27), beginning with South Africa’s visit to Pakistan for a two-Test series in October this year.
