Bangladesh stun Australia to seal historic first Test win Down Under

Bangladesh stunned Australia by nine wickets in the opening Test in Darwin on Sunday, securing their first-ever Test win on Australian soil after chasing 57 runs.

How did Bangladesh beat Australia in the first Test?

Bangladesh won after bowling Australia out for 284 and chasing down a 57-run target by nine wickets.Mominul Haque struck the winning boundary, completing a historic victory built on disciplined batting, bowling and fielding.

"This is the biggest win so far for Bangladesh in any format," captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said.

"Going forward we want to do something special in the future.

"I'm very happy, proud of myself and the way the boys played. We did a lot of hard work."

Bangladesh had already taken control after bowling Australia out for 198 in the first innings. They then piled on the pressure throughout Sunday, refusing to panic when Cameron Green reached his third Test century after lunch on day four.

Green scored 104 but received little support as Bangladesh continued taking crucial wickets. Mehidy Hasan Miraz finished with 5-66 to complete a decisive bowling performance.

"Five years ago pacers didn't want to play Tests, but we've been playing lots of Test cricket and they are giving importance to the Test format," he said.

Why was Bangladesh's Test win over Australia so historic?

The victory marked Bangladesh's first Test win in Australia, coming at the third attempt. Their dominant performance against a full-strength Australian side made the nine-wicket result even more significant.

Australia captain Pat Cummins praised Bangladesh and admitted his side had been outplayed in every aspect.

"They outplayed us in all facets, they were patient and disciplined," Cummins said.

"I thought our prep was spot-on, no excuses.

"They played well. We had to find a way to bat longer and then we couldn't penetrate with the ball."

Australia entered the match as overwhelming favourites, while Bangladesh arrived after losing their only warm-up game against a Cricket Australia XI. That match had included a second-innings collapse in which Bangladesh were dismissed for 54.

The Test proved very different. Bangladesh outplayed Australia in batting, bowling and catching, winning every session and maintaining pressure throughout the match.

Australia, despite fielding their best possible team, struggled from the start. They were bowled out on the opening day before Bangladesh's gritty batting display put the hosts under sustained pressure.

How did Bangladesh put Australia under pressure in Darwin?

Led by opener Tanzid Hasan's maiden Test century, Bangladesh made 426 and kept Australia in the field for 138 overs in Darwin's heat and humidity. Their bowlers then showed patience on Saturday, making regular breakthroughs to keep Australia under pressure.

Australia resumed Sunday at 161-4, with their hopes resting on Alex Carey and Green. Carey survived early on, twice edging Hasan Mahmud through the vacant slips cordon for boundaries.

But Mehidy soon produced the breakthrough Australia needed to avoid. He pitched the ball in line and turned it sharply, taking Carey's outside edge through to wicketkeeper Litton Das.

Mehidy struck again shortly afterwards, bowling Beau Webster for five to leave Australia 193-6 and in serious trouble.

A famous Bangladesh victory moved closer when Cummins pushed forward to a Mehidy delivery and got an inside edge to short leg. Shadman Islam held the sharp chance, leaving Australia 207-7, still 21 runs behind Bangladesh's first-innings total.

Mehidy completed the innings by trapping Nathan Lyon leg before wicket, leaving Bangladesh with only 57 runs to chase.

Despite losing Tanzid in the first over, Mominul and Shadman remained composed and cruised to victory, completing Bangladesh's historic first Test win in Australia.
