Mourinho sends LaLiga title warning as Real Madrid expose Barcelona’s fatigue

Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Barcelona at Camp Nou was more than a statement win in the first El Clasico of the 2026/27 season. It offered an early indication that Jose Mourinho’s return to Spanish football could threaten Barcelona’s recent dominance of LaLiga.

Kylian Mbappe scored twice to hand Madrid their first league victory over Barcelona this season, ending the Catalans’ unbeaten start after 10 matches. The result also reduced the gap between the rivals to three points.

Barcelona enjoyed more possession, completed more passes and registered more shots, but the statistics did not fully capture the difference between the teams.

Madrid appeared better equipped to deal with their opponents’ pressing, while Barcelona struggled to maintain the physical intensity required to execute their game plan.

Can Mourinho turn El Clasico victory into a LaLiga title challenge?

Madrid’s victory was particularly significant given their recent record against Barcelona. The Spanish giants had managed just one win in their previous seven meetings before Sunday’s encounter, making this result an important psychological breakthrough for Mourinho’s team.

The Portuguese coach has returned to a familiar rivalry with a different challenge. During his first spell at Madrid, his team suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat against Barcelona at Camp Nou in his first Clasico. This time, his side left the same stadium with three points and renewed momentum.

Mourinho was pleased with the quality of the contest and the manner in which his players executed their responsibilities.

“First of all, I think it was a great game. A very high-level game. I’m sure everyone around the world who loves soccer stopped to watch it, and they won’t have been disappointed. Two teams went out to win.

“As far as we’re concerned, I should really focus on my own players. The boys put in an extraordinary performance. They were very organized, focused and showed tremendous character playing out from the back against an opponent that presses.”

However, Mourinho was quick to warn against excessive celebration, insisting that defeating Barcelona would mean little if Madrid failed to maintain their form in subsequent matches.

"This is a great win, but when we get back to work, I'm not going to let anyone have their head in the clouds," Mourinho said.

"If we win today and lose at El Sardinero [away at Racing Santander next weekend], Real Madrid don't play to win at Camp Nou, but rather to win the league. We have to keep going."

How did Madrid expose Barcelona’s tactical weaknesses?

The most significant aspect of Madrid’s performance was their ability to play through Barcelona’s pressing.

Flick’s side generally seek to dominate possession and force opponents into mistakes through sustained pressure. However, Madrid repeatedly found ways to escape that pressure with urgency and precision, preventing Barcelona from establishing complete control over the contest.

Although Barcelona recorded superior possession and passing numbers, Madrid looked comfortable identifying spaces and exploiting them when opportunities emerged.

Fede Valverde was particularly influential in executing the game plan. The Uruguayan midfielder started at right-back for the third consecutive match and delivered an impressive performance despite playing through injury, according to Mourinho.

Valverde’s ability to recognise spaces during transitions helped Madrid move the ball forward and avoid being trapped in their own half.

His deployment in defence has attracted attention because he previously expressed reservations about playing in that position. In September 2025, Valverde said he was “not born to play as a full-back.”

He subsequently denied being unwilling to play in defence, but his performances have nevertheless demonstrated his adaptability.

More importantly, Valverde’s display offered evidence that Mourinho is finding ways to maximise the qualities of his players while building trust within the dressing room.

Madrid’s victory was therefore not simply about Mbappe’s finishing. It also reflected a tactical approach that limited Barcelona’s ability to impose their preferred style.

Why does Flick believe Barcelona lacked freshness?

Flick refused to use fatigue as an excuse for Barcelona’s defeat but acknowledged that his players were not physically sharp enough to perform at their usual level.

The loss was Barcelona’s first in 10 LaLiga matches and their second defeat in the same week. The demanding schedule, defensive injuries and travel commitments have complicated the manager’s efforts to maintain consistency.

“We played against an opponent that was better than in previous Clásicos. We weren’t fresh. We have to recover, concentrate, and react.

“It’s not easy, but we have to accept it. Barça has to keep going.”

The German coach believes Barcelona must recover the physical sharpness they displayed earlier in the campaign.

“Well, we have to try to switch off and forget about training. We need to regain the freshness we had in the previous matches of the season.”

Flick felt his team improved after the interval and did enough to restore parity at 1-1. However, Barcelona’s decision to press high in search of a winner ultimately left them vulnerable to Madrid’s counter-attacking threat.

“I’m not satisfied. Today it was clear we weren’t 100% fresh. Normally we would have been fresher. We played well in the second half, and Madrid only had two chances to score a second goal.

“We controlled the game and scored to make it 1-1. In the end, we pressed high, and they countered and scored.

“It’s not good for us, but we have to accept it. Defeats are also part of football,” Flick said.

The defeat highlighted a potential weakness in Barcelona’s approach: when the intensity of their pressing drops, their defensive structure can become more vulnerable to opponents capable of exploiting space quickly.

Barcelona’s immediate priority is to restore their energy levels while managing their defensive absences. Eric Garcia, Jules Kounde, Dani Olmo, Andreas Christensen and Roony Bardghji were unavailable for the Clasico.

Olmo is expected to miss around a month after suffering an injury to the adductor muscle in his left leg.

Kounde, meanwhile, had been working to recover from an ankle injury but did not return to fitness in time for Sunday's encounter.

Christensen and Eric Garcia are further defensive absentees, while Bardghji's absence removed another option from Flick's selection.
