Multiple explosions and heavy gunfire were heard near a police training center in Pakistan’s northwestern city of Dera Ismail Khan on Friday evening, police officials said.

Terrorists launched an assault on the center and managed to enter its premises, police confirmed to Nukta. The exact number of attackers was not immediately known, though initial reports suggested seven or eight militants. Three of them were reported killed.

The operation was still under way late Friday, with security forces engaged in clearing the compound.

Officials cautioned that the situation remained fluid and details were being verified.

Police said District Police Officer Sajjad Sahibzada was leading the search and clearance operation. Security forces had reached the site and cordoned off the area.

“Three terrorists have been eliminated, and there are reports of some police personnel being injured,” an official said. He added that communication in the area was hampered by network disruptions.

The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP, claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attack comes as the law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province deteriorates. Militant assaults on security forces and police have surged in recent months, officials said.

The province has witnessed a sharp rise in incidents linked to TTP. Authorities have responded by tightening security across the region, but attacks continue.
