Dubai is set to introduce a groundbreaking public transport solution—the Rail Bus, a fully 3D-printed, solar-powered vehicle made from recyclable materials, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Monday, Khaleej Times reported.

Currently under development, the autonomous system is expected to transform urban mobility in the emirate by offering an affordable and environmentally friendly transit option.

A prototype of the Rail Bus is being showcased at the World Government Summit 2025 at Madinat Jumeirah. With a sleek gold and black exterior, the vehicle features two rows of orange seats and designated areas for passengers with disabilities, ensuring accessibility.

Each carriage measures 11.5 meters in length and 2.9 meters in height, accommodating up to 40 passengers, including 22 seated.

Overhead screens provide real-time updates on stops, weather conditions, and travel time. Passenger safety information is clearly displayed inside the carriage, with control panels located at both ends.

Sustainable and efficient design

The Rail Bus will operate on elevated tracks throughout the city, reaching speeds of up to 100 km/h. It will seamlessly integrate with Dubai’s existing public transport systems, enhancing first- and last-mile connectivity.

The initiative supports Dubai’s ambition to become the world's smartest city and aligns with national goals, including the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy, Dubai's Zero-Emissions Public Transport Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Self-Driving Transport Strategy 2030, which targets making 25 percent of daily trips autonomous.

The Rail Bus’s lightweight and scalable 3D-printed design reduces its environmental footprint while boosting efficiency. Solar-powered elevated tracks will further promote sustainability.

While an official launch date is yet to be announced, the Rail Bus promises to redefine public transport in Dubai.
