Dubai Police have officially announced the locations for this year’s Ramadan iftar cannons, a long-standing tradition marking the breaking of fast during the Muslim holy month.
Khaleej Times reported seven stationary cannons will be placed across the emirate, while a roaming cannon will travel to 17 different sites to allow more residents to experience the custom.
The tradition dates back decades and involves firing cannons twice on the eve of Ramadan, once daily at sunset throughout the month, and twice on the morning of Eid Al Fitr.
It remains a key cultural event, drawing crowds eager to witness the booming signal for iftar.
Maj. Gen. Abdullah Al Ghaithi, Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs at Dubai Police, said the expansion aims to make the tradition more accessible.
“The increase in locations is a response to public feedback, allowing a greater segment of the community to partake in this beloved tradition,” he said.
Fixed cannons will be placed at Expo City Dubai, Burj Khalifa, Festival City, Uptown, Madinat Jumeirah, DAMAC Hills, and Hatta Guest House.
Meanwhile, the roaming cannon will be stationed for two days at each of the 17 locations, including Meydan Hotel, Satwa Grand Mosque, Zabeel Park, Kite Beach Jumeirah, and Al Barsha Park.
Dubai will use two historic French-made 25-pound cannons from the 1960s. These cannons produce a sound of 170 decibels, audible up to 10 kilometers away.
According to Dubai’s Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD), Ramadan 2025 is expected to begin on March 1.
At the start of the month, fasting will last approximately 14 hours and 13 minutes, gradually increasing to 14 hours and 55 minutes.
According to The National, besides the cannon firings, Expo City Dubai will host the "Ramadan District", featuring cultural activities, workshops, and live performances from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. daily.
By expanding cannon locations and Ramadan events, Dubai continues to honor its traditions while ensuring broader community participation.
