Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) won the Global Gold category at the Green World Awards, presented by the UK-based Green Organisation. This prestigious accolade celebrates the Route 2020 project for its outstanding contributions to environmental sustainability and innovative urban transportation practices.
Route 2020, which opened in 2021, has made significant strides in environmental conservation. The project successfully reduced 35,319 tons of carbon emissions and has implemented best practices for conserving the environment, including green initiatives and energy and water-saving measures.
The route spans 15 kilometers from the Jabal Ali metro station to the Expo 2020 site. It includes 11.8 kilometers of elevated track and 3.2 kilometers underground, connecting seven stations and shortening the journey from Dubai Marina to Expo to just 16 minutes.
The metro line serves densely populated areas like the Gardens, Discovery Gardens, Al Furjan, Jumeirah Golf Estates, Dubai Investment Park, and Expo, serving around 270,000 people.
Notably, the RTA’s seven Route 2020 stations earned LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council, which awards certificates to best-in-class buildings based on the strategies and practices applied.
The Green World Award is one of the world's most prestigious environmental awards, and the recognition not only underscores RTA's commitment to sustainability but also reinforces its leadership in harmonizing urban development with environmental stewardship, setting a benchmark for future initiatives.
