The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has granted Hazara Electric Supply Company Limited (HAZECO) a 20-year license to operate as the Supplier of Last Resort in seven districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The license authorizes HAZECO to supply electricity across Abbottabad, Haripur, Mansehra, Battagram, Torghar, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan, and Kolai Pallas.

The company has taken over the service area from Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) following a federal government mandate to reorganize PESCO’s territory.

NEPRA approved the license after reviewing stakeholder input, including endorsements from the Ministry of Energy and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company.

The company will serve roughly 800,000 consumers over 16,749 square kilometers using 210 high-tension feeders.

During the 2023-24 fiscal year, the region recorded a peak demand of 712 MW, with energy sales reaching 2,346 gigawatt-hours.

Under the license terms, HAZECO must implement automated meter reading and mobile-based billing systems to minimize errors, adhere to cost-efficient power procurement rules, and ensure seamless coordination with the national grid.

NEPRA also requires the company to submit a tariff proposal for approval and formally separate its distribution and supply operations within two years. The license expires in 2045 but is eligible for renewal.
