For many athletes, a torn ACL and meniscus injury would signal the end of a sporting career. For Faisal Shafi, it became the beginning of a remarkable journey that would take him across five continents, into the record books, and into Pakistan’s sporting history.

Today, Shafi stands as the first Pakistani runner to complete all eight World Marathon Majors, a feat achieved by only a select group of runners worldwide. Yet his story is not simply about medals and finish lines, it is about resilience, determination, and refusing to accept limits imposed by others.

Years ago, doctors delivered a devastating verdict after Shafi suffered severe knee injuries. Running and jumping, they warned, might no longer be possible. Faced with a future far removed from the active lifestyle he loved, Shafi made a choice that would define the years ahead: he refused to give up.

Through intensive physiotherapy, rehabilitation, and countless hours of strengthening his body, he slowly rebuilt himself. Progress was measured in small victories. He returned first through obstacle-course races, then half marathons, steadily proving that the impossible was becoming possible.

The breakthrough came in 2019 when Shafi lined up for his first full marathon in Dubai. Crossing the finish line in an impressive 3 hours and 45 minutes, he discovered a new passion and a new purpose. What began as a personal challenge soon evolved into a quest to compete on the world’s biggest marathon stages.

Over the following years, Shafi embarked on a journey across the globe, conquering the sport’s most prestigious races. His World Marathon Majors journey included New York in 2022, followed by Berlin, London, and Chicago in 2023. In 2024, he added Tokyo and Boston to his growing collection before completing Sydney in 2025 and Cape Town in 2026.

Each race represented far more than a finish line. Together, they symbolized perseverance over adversity and years of unwavering commitment to a dream that once seemed unattainable.

Shafi’s achievements extend beyond marathon completion. In 2025, he earned a place in the Guinness World Records by setting the official record for the fastest marathon run in a light military uniform. Competing at the Sydney Marathon, he completed the 42.195-kilometre course in an outstanding time of 3 hours, 40 minutes, and 13 seconds, adding another milestone to an already remarkable career.

His accomplishments come at a transformative time for marathon running. The World Marathon Majors originally consisted of six races, Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London, New York, and Tokyo, with the prestigious Six Star medal introduced in 2016 for runners who completed them all. The series later expanded to include Sydney in 2025 and Cape Town in 2026, creating the current eight-race circuit.

But Shafi’s journey is far from over.

Looking ahead, he has set his sights on an ambitious 2027 campaign. His season is expected to begin at the Karachi Marathon before taking on one of the toughest endurance events on the planet: the Antarctic Ice Marathon. He then plans to finish the year at the Shanghai Marathon as he pursues the historic 9-Star medal, expected to be introduced if Shanghai officially joins the World Marathon Majors circuit.

For Shafi, the pursuit of the 9-Star medal is about more than personal achievement. It is the continuation of a story built on resilience, a story that began when experts said he would never run again.

From hospital visits and rehabilitation sessions to world-famous marathon courses spanning five continents, Faisal Shafi’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that setbacks do not define a person. Determination does.

And as he prepares for the next chapter of his adventure, one thing is certain: the runner who was once told his race was over is still moving forward, inspiring countless others with every step.
