A fire erupted at a private hotel in Karachi, where players competing in the National Women's ODI Cup 2024 were accommodated, causing damage to their belongings.
Following the incident on Monday, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decided to shorten the tournament, originally scheduled from November 8 to 30.
The fire broke out while some players were engaged in matches at the UBL Sports Complex and HPC Oval Ground in Karachi, while others were resting at the hotel.
"Fortunately, no players were injured, as the PCB promptly evacuated the five players in the hotel at the time of the incident and relocated them safely to the Hanif Mohammad High-Performance Centre," the PCB said in a statement.
The rapid action of local authorities, including police and Rescue 1122 teams, ensured timely assistance. Firefighters, supported by two ambulances and four fire trucks, responded promptly to contain the blaze.
According to sources, some players' possessions stored in the hotel were damaged in the fire.
The PCB instructed all players and management involved in the tournament to return home.
Reasons behind curtailment
The decision to curtail the tournament was driven by the PCB's emphasis on player health and safety.
Furthermore, the inability to secure alternative accommodations meeting the required standard of nearly 100 rooms contributed to the decision.
The PCB spokesperson said that logistical challenges arose due to the International Defence Exhibition and Seminars (IDEAS) 2024, which limited the availability of suitable accommodations in Karachi.
Initially, the tournament was set to follow a double league format, with each team playing eight matches before the top two teams advanced to the final scheduled for November 30.
"To determine the tournament winner, the PCB has decided that the Invincibles and the Stars - the top-two teams after four matches each - will face off in the final," the PCB stated.
The PCB will provide further details about the date and venue of the final match later.
