For decades, Karachi has suffered from the deadly danger of open manholes, a problem even highlighted in a 1980 Pakistani film. Today, the situation is worse: 24 people have died this year after falling into drains and sewer lines. With nearly 250,000 manholes in the city and thousands of missing covers, lives remain at risk.

Iron lids are stolen, weak lids collapse, and tragedies like Ibrahim’s case keep repeating. Yet the solution already exists: fiber-reinforced manhole covers in North Nazimabad, durable, metal-free, and theft-proof. Karachi has lost too many lives. Without urgent action, the next tragedy is only a matter of time.
