Hutchison Ports Pakistan has announced a $76 million investment program for 2026 and 2027 to upgrade operations and expand capacity at the country's deep-water container terminal.

The plan covers new electric cranes, trucks and trailers as the company modernizes its Karachi Port facility.

What does Hutchison Ports Pakistan's $76 million investment cover?

The programme includes two electric remote-controlled quay cranes and 17 electric remote-controlled rubber-tyre gantry cranes. It also adds 70 electric trucks and 50 trailers to the terminal's fleet.

The facility has already received 20 electric trucks, 10 trailers, a reach stacker and an empty container handler this year as part of the modernization drive.

How much has Hutchison Ports Pakistan invested in total?

The company said cumulative investment at the terminal is expected to exceed $690 million by the end of 2026. The latest funding aims to improve productivity and operational efficiency at the site. It also supports Hutchison Ports Group's global sustainability goals through fleet electrification and lower-emission supply chains.

Hutchison Ports Pakistan CEO CS Kim said the continuous investment reflects the company's commitment to Pakistan's economic growth and maritime leadership. He said the firm was working with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Karachi Port Trust and the government to support Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's vision of turning Pakistan into a major transshipment hub.

Why is Hutchison Ports Pakistan upgrading its equipment?

Kim said the new technology would help cut vessel and cargo turnaround times. He added that it would improve cargo handling and clearance, and generate longer-term economic benefits for the terminal. The upgrades form part of a wider push to boost capacity at Pakistan's main port.

As part of the broader program, Hutchison Ports Pakistan has submitted a proposal to the government for additional land to build a Centralized Examination Area. The company said the facility is intended to streamline cargo examination and support the development of a higher-capacity logistics hub at Karachi Port.
