Imran's nephew, 59 other civilians convicted by Pakistan military courts for targeting military sites
Convictions come days after 25 civilians were handed down prison sentences for May 9, 2023 riots
Military courts in Pakistan sentenced on Thursday 60 more civilians, including the nephew of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, to prison terms ranging from two to 10 years for their roles in violent attacks on military installations during the May 9, 2023, nationwide riots.
The development comes just days after civilian courts handed down prison terms to at least 25 civilians involved in the attacks.
The incidents, triggered by the arrest of Imran Khan, included assaults on the Jinnah House in Lahore and the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi among other sites.
According to a statement issued by the military's media wing, the court-martial process adhered to strict legal protocols, ensuring the accused were provided with their constitutional rights.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the sentences were based on evidence and testimonies presented during the trials.
Imran's nephew, Hassaan Niazi, was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in the Jinnah House attack case. Other high-profile convicts in the same case included Brigadier (retd) Javed Akram, sentenced to six years, and Captain (retd) Waqas Ahmed Mohsin, who received a two-year sentence.

The ISPR said that the trials for all individuals detained in military custody for the May 9 events have now concluded. Convicted individuals retain the right to appeal their sentences.
The violent protests of May 9, described by officials as an unprecedented challenge to state institutions, erupted after the first arrest of Imran Khan. Rioters targeted military and government buildings, prompting authorities to pursue suspects under military laws.
“The nation, government, and armed forces remain resolute in maintaining justice and the state's indomitable writ,” the ISPR said in its statement.
