India and China have agreed to resume direct passenger flights after a nearly five-year hiatus, India’s foreign ministry announced on Monday. The move marks a significant step toward rebuilding ties after relations soured following a deadly 2020 border clash.

Officials from both nations will finalize a framework for air connectivity during an upcoming meeting, underscoring ongoing efforts to mend relations.

The announcement follows improved diplomatic exchanges over the past few months, including a pivotal October meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Russia.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during his meeting with Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in Beijing, emphasized the importance of fostering mutual understanding and substantive measures to promote cooperation.

"Specific concerns in the economic and trade areas were discussed with a view to resolving these issues and promoting long-term policy transparency and predictability," India’s foreign ministry said.

Restoration after conflict

Tensions escalated in 2020 after a deadly clash along the Himalayan border, prompting India to impose strict economic measures against Chinese entities.

Passenger air services were suspended, though cargo flights continued. Recent reports suggest that both nations have softened their stances, with India considering the reopening of skies and fast-tracking visa approvals.

The two countries have agreed to resume functional exchanges and discussions through the India-China Expert Level Mechanism.

Wang Yi stressed the importance of mutual support over "suspicion and alienation," signaling a shared commitment to improving bilateral ties.

While the restoration of direct air services is a positive development, challenges remain as both nations work to resolve lingering trade and border disputes.
