‘We're super stoked!’ Producer Ammara Hikmat elated on the film’s release in India
The Legend of Maula Jatt is not just the most successful Pakistani film ever, it has been the most talked about film in recent years. The popularity of Bilal Lashari’s blockbuster will likely surge with its release in Indian cinemas on October 2.
The news regarding the film’s Indian release was confirmed on their Instagram page and shared by the actors. The film remains a box office hit globally, even two years post-release, making it one of the most successful films ever in the country.
Produced by Ammara Hikmat and Asad J Khan, with Bilal Lashari and Nasir Adeeb collaborating on the script, the film brought a cult classic to life.
While talking exclusively to Nukta, producer Ammara Hikmat said that releasing The Legend of Maula Jatt in India felt like the missing piece, something we’d long hoped for.
“We're super stoked! It felt like something was missing until we could share this film with our Punjabi brothers and sisters in India. They’ve been waiting eagerly, and we’re thrilled to finally bring this dream to life—for them and for us.”
Why is the release of The Legend of Maula Jatt a moment to celebrate?
While Indian Punjabi films have consistently screened in Pakistan, the release of a major Pakistani film in India could be a game-changer.
Three of the film’s stars—Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, and Humaima Malik—have worked in Bollywood. Meanwhile, Hamza Ali Abbasi and Gohar Rasheed are well-known TV actors in India.
Despite their popularity, many Pakistani artists remain unable to work in Bollywood due to political restrictions. Imran Abbas was the last Pakistani actor in a lead role in an Indian film, starring in Jee Ve Sohneya Jee, which was released worldwide earlier this year.
Though distributors Zee Studios haven't yet revealed the full list of cinemas, it’s expected the film will open first in Punjab’s metros and New Delhi, where Punjabi is widely spoken and understood.
Why You Shouldn’t miss The Legend of Maula Jatt
Bilal Lashari’s film isn’t just another Pakistani movie—it’s the country’s most expensive production since independence. While the exact budget wasn't disclosed, the film reportedly cost Rs 45 crores to make and has grossed over Rs 400 crores globally.
There are many reasons behind the success of The Legend of Maula Jatt, with Fawad Khan and Hamza Ali Abbasi being there on top. The two were cast as Maula Jatt and Noori Natt respectively and had huge shoes to fill, since Sultan Rahi and Mustafa Qureshi had already made the characters iconic in the original Maula Jatt in 1979.
However, The Legend of Maula Jatt was darker compared to the earlier version, and each supporting character was treated as a main lead. From Mahira Khan’s Makhoo and Humaima Malik’s Daaro to Faris Shafi’s Mooda and Gohar Rasheed’s Maakha, every actor fit their role perfectly.
Even though Fawad Khan was the star performer in the film, Humaima Malik and Hamza Ali Abbasi stole the show as the ruthless, power-hungry siblings. Hamza Ali Abbasi’s dialogue delivery was matched by Humaima’s hot-as-hell performance while the grand fight sequences added thrill to the proceedings.
Fans in India have eagerly awaited The Legend of Maula Jatt since its Pakistani release two years ago, and the upcoming screening in Indian cinemas will finally mark the end of that waiting period. One hopes that The Legend of Maula Jatt proves to be an ice breaker for Pakistani films in India, and opens new doors for artists to pursue cross border collaborations.
