Internet speed and connectivity across Pakistan has slowed following a fault in two undersea cable systems that provide international bandwidth to the country.

According to a spokesperson for Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), the disruption has partially affected capacity on the SEA-ME-WE 4 (SMW4) and the India-Middle East-Western Europe (IMEWE) submarine cable systems.

The damage occurred in Saudi territorial waters near Jeddah, impacting data flow and causing service degradation, particularly during peak hours.

“Our international partners are working on a priority to resolve the issue, while local teams are actively arranging alternative bandwidth to minimize the impact,” the PTCL spokesperson said. “We sincerely appreciate our users’ patience and understanding during this time.”

Efforts are underway to reroute internet traffic through alternative international routes. Full restoration is expected once the damaged cables are repaired.

Submarine cables are critical to Pakistan’s internet infrastructure, carrying the majority of international data traffic to and from the country.
