Iran files complaint to UN aviation watchdog over US flight restrictions

Iran has filed a complaint with the UN aviation watchdog over US flight restrictions on its aviation sector, state media reported on Monday. The sanctions, imposed this month, have forced Iranian airlines to cancel international flights after several countries introduced bans.

Why did Iran file a complaint over US flight restrictions?

Iran says the US restrictions on its aviation industry are illegal and harm the sector's legitimate rights. Civil aviation chief Abouzar Shiroudi said Tehran submitted a formal protest to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the UN agency that sets civil aviation standards.

The United States imposed restrictions on the entire aviation industry in Iran this month. It also vowed to take a hard line against companies that assist the sector.

What did Iran's civil aviation chief say about the complaint?

"To defend the legitimate rights of the aviation industry and counter illegal restrictions imposed by America, Iran has drafted and submitted a formal protest to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)," Shiroudi said, according to Iran's official IRNA news agency. The ICAO is based in Montreal, Canada.

"In cooperation with the foreign ministry, we have also filed a complaint with the International Court of Justice at The Hague," Shiroudi added.

As the sanctions took effect last Wednesday, major airlines were forced to cancel international flights after several countries implemented bans.

Where can Iranians still fly after the US restrictions?

Destinations in neighboring Turkey are now the primary options for Iranians wishing to enter or exit the country. Routes also remain available to Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, Russia, Malaysia and Thailand, while flights to the United Arab Emirates have been suspended.

An official from Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport said on Sunday that Iranian airlines were still serving around 30 international destinations.

Dubai was the most important Middle Eastern destination for Iranian airlines, with several flights daily from Iran. The UAE financial hub offers onward connections to Europe, Asia and Africa. It also served as a stopover for many Iranian travelers.
