Iran president says supreme leader backs new plan to reopen Hormuz

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Saturday that Tehran's new plan to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz was coordinated with supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

He made the comments in an interview with US broadcaster CBS, according to excerpts released by state news agency IRNA.

Pezeshkian said Iran's leadership has fully endorsed the proposal and that Tehran will meet its side of the deal if Washington does the same. He confirmed a six member team with decision making authority has been negotiating the terms.

"Coordination with the leader of the revolution (the supreme leader)... has been carried out," Pezeshkian said. "If the US accepts it and fulfils its obligations, we will do the same, and there will be no issue in this regard," he added.

The strait remains central to the deadlocked conflict between the US and Iran, now in its seventh month, and is crucial to the world's oil supply. Pezeshkian said the six member Iranian team includes representatives from various organizations and bodies, including the military, the parliament and the government.

Washington has not yet publicly responded to Iran's proposal, though reports indicate President Donald Trump has rejected the plan. The plan calls for a full cessation of hostilities across the Middle East.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the plan's conditions match those laid out in a memorandum of understanding signed with the US in June. These include releasing frozen Iranian assets worth an estimated $12 billion, lifting sanctions on Iranian oil, and ending the US naval blockade of Iran.
