Major General Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Thursday, personally delivering a strategic message from Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei amid ongoing military and diplomatic confrontations across the Middle East.

What was focus of the closed-door Kremlin meeting?

According to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Rezaei traveled to Moscow for high-level consultations as Tehran navigates persistent military standoffs and economic pressures in the Persian Gulf.

As confirmed by the SNSC Secretariat, the Iranian security chief personally presented the direct communication from Ayatollah Khamenei during the meeting.

The Kremlin session followed a preparatory telephone conversation between Rezaei and President Putin on Monday, during which both officials emphasized the need to expand strategic coordination and bilateral defense cooperation.

Russian state news agency TASS reported that discussions during the closed-door Kremlin session centered on regional security dynamics, deepening military and economic integration, and the volatile security environment surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov and the head of the Main Directorate of the Russian General Staff, Admiral Igor Kostyukov, also attended the meeting alongside Iranian officials.

Iran’s Mohsen Rezaei says Russian President Vladimir Putin strongly condemns US and Israeli attacks on Iran, including strikes targeting the country’s nuclear facilities, in remarks to IRNA.

What does Khamenei's message signal for the regional order?

According to Al Jazeera, the direct correspondence from Ayatollah Khamenei underscores Iran's concerted push toward establishing an "indigenous regional order" aimed at minimizing Western military influence across West Asia, while securing Moscow's diplomatic and defensive alignment amid protracted disputes over maritime corridors and global energy supplies.
