Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable 23-year career with the national team.

The 41-year-old confirmed his decision in a video message shared on X on Thursday, revealing that he would bring his international journey to an end after the November break.

“To the Portuguese people, the day has come for me to hand back the number 7 shirt of our national team,” Ronaldo said.

“It was not an easy decision, because there are decisions that are not made only with the head. They are also made with the heart,” he added.

How did Ronaldo shape Portugal's international history?

Ronaldo made his senior debut against Kazakhstan in August 2003 and went on to establish himself as one of the most influential figures in the history of international football.

He finishes his career as the most-capped player in men's international football, with 234 appearances, while his 146 goals remain an all-time record. He also contributed 45 assists and scored 10 international hat-tricks.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward reached the pinnacle of his international career in 2016, captaining Portugal to their maiden European Championship title after a victory over hosts France in the final.

He subsequently led his country to two UEFA Nations League triumphs, lifting the trophy in 2019 and again in 2025.

Ronaldo also overtook Iran's Ali Daei, who had scored 109 international goals, in 2021 before extending his record to 146.

What did Ronaldo say in his farewell message?

Reflecting on his journey, Ronaldo expressed gratitude to his family, fellow players, coaches, staff and the Portuguese supporters who stood behind him throughout his international career.

“If I ever made you happy, if one of my goals ever made you hug someone, forget a worry or feel proud of our country, then it was all worth it.”

“Portugal will always be a part of me,” he captioned the announcement video.

His departure brings an end to an era for Portuguese football, with the legendary forward leaving behind three major international trophies and records that will be difficult to surpass.
