Remains found in Mahodand Lake in Pakistan’s Swat district may belong to Bushra Samoo, a woman missing since a boat capsized on July 1, rescue officials said.

Local residents spotted a skull between rocks, and DNA samples have been collected to confirm identity.

Who do the remains found in the Swat lake belong to?

Rescue officials suspect the remains belong to Samoo, who went missing in July after a boat capsized. They cite police confirmation that no other person has been reported missing from the lake.

The identity cannot be confirmed until forensic procedures are complete, Niaz Khan said.

How were the remains discovered?

Local residents spotted the skull trapped between two large rocks in the lake and alerted rescue teams, Khan, a media coordinator for the state-run Rescue 1122 service, told Nukta.

The remains, which include a skull and bones, were taken to Madian Hospital. Khan said they were severely decomposed, which made visual identification difficult.

What happened to Bushra Samoo?

Samoo was one of seven family members aboard a boat that capsized on July 1 during a visit to the popular tourist destination of Kalam. The boat lost control, Khan said, killing six people, while Samoo was reported missing.

Her father, Aamir Hindal, a former lieutenant commander in the Pakistan Navy, was visiting the area with his family from Punjab province.

Rescue teams searched the lake and surrounding areas for three months but did not find her, Khan said. The formal search operation was later concluded, though rescue personnel kept monitoring locations around the lake in the hope of finding her.
