Newly disclosed correspondence from convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein shows he privately described Pakistan’s incarcerated ex-prime minister Imran Khan as a “much greater threat to peace” than several world leaders, characterizing him as “really bad news” in an exchange from 2018.
The emails - released this week by Democrats on the US House Oversight Committee - form part of a wider set of communications made public amid renewed scrutiny of Epstein’s political links. Epstein, who faced federal charges of sex trafficking minors in 2019, died by suicide later that year while awaiting trial at 66.
In one exchange dated 31 July 2018, shortly after Khan’s party won Pakistan’s general election, Epstein discussed global politics with an unidentified correspondent. The excerpts, shared by Drop Site on X, show him first remarking that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been “kind so far” before making a sardonic comment about “how the US involves itself in others’ elections.”
The exchange quickly shifted to Pakistan. “Putin hasn’t pointed out assassinations to overthrow [governments] … coup funding … Imran in Pakistan, a much greater threat to peace than Erdogan, Khomeini, Xi or Putin,” Epstein wrote.
The recipient appeared surprised, responding: “The populist in Pakistan???” Epstein replied curtly: “really bad news.”
The individual pressed further, asking: “The cricket player? - How could he be worse that the Islamist?” Epstein answered: “Makes Donald look like Einstein. Incapable of truth. Devout Islamist.”
Epstein then claimed: “Many nuclear weapons. (not Erdogan or Khamenei). He was married to two friends of mine, one daughter of Jimmy Goldsmith. Super wealthy take over guy. Forced her to convert. Wacko.”
He added another assessment of Khan’s political persona: “It follows your prediction around cults of personality. He is a cricket captain. Not a chess player, but he’s good at rousing the crowd.” The thread then paused for slightly over half an hour before the two moved on to unrelated subjects.
Khan’s name resurfaced online as users shared excerpts of the emails alongside an old photograph of him with British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, taken at a London event in 1990. Maxwell, once Epstein’s close associate, is serving a 20-year sentence after being convicted in 2021 of helping Epstein sexually abuse minors.
