Wandering through the narrow lanes of Jodia Bazaar, one feels the pulse of Karachi’s history.

Established during the Talpur’s rule in Sindh, this 180-year-old market, once a vital hub for trade during the British Raj due to its proximity to the port, has seen small businesses grow into household names—like Pakistan's Tapal Tea, which began in these very streets before becoming a global brand.

Old heritage buildings located around the market speak of themselves about precious history engraved in them.

Jodia bazaar has witnessed the transformation of Karachi from a small port city to a thriving metropolis. Its narrow alleys and colorful stalls reflect the city's rich cultural heritage, blending Indian, Middle Eastern, and Pakistani influences.

Talking to Nukta, Abdul Rauf Ibrahim, Chairman Wholesale Grocers Association, said for generations, merchants and traders have flocked to Jodia Bazaar to purchase goods in bulk, catering to the needs of Karachi's rapidly growing population.

“This bustling marketplace has been a hub for wholesale trade, particularly in grains, spices, and dry fruits. Transactions worth PKR 400-500 million take place here each day.”

Despite Karachi’s rapid urbanization and the rise of supermarkets, Jodia Bazaar holds a unique appeal, supplying around 80% of Pakistan's annual $8 billion food imports.

Jodia Bazaar has also played a significant role in Karachi's economic development, providing livelihoods for thousands of traders, merchants, and laborers.

Loyal customers swear by its unbeatable quality and prices.

Join Nukta as we delve into the nostalgia-filled alleys and uncover stories of resilience, tradition, and trade at the heart of Karachi’s oldest market.
