A Pakistani journalist working with the television channel Dawn News was found dead in his car on Saturday night in the southern district of Sanghar, authorities said.
The body of Khawar Husain was discovered on Hyderabad Road outside a private hotel, according to Sanghar police. Officers said he was found in the driver’s seat with a close-range gunshot wound to the head.
A pistol was also recovered from Husain’s hand, police said. Investigators are examining whether the case was a suicide or if assailants tried to stage the killing as one.
According to Dawn, Sanghar Senior Superintendent of Police Abid Ali Baloch said the body was moved to a hospital and that a formal investigation was underway.
He added that Husain’s family was originally from Sanghar, though his parents and other relatives live in the United States. The reason for his visit from Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city and media hub, was still being determined.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took notice of what he described as an unnatural death. He directed the provincial police chief to assign the case to a senior officer and submit a report.
The government of Sindh province has formed a high-level inquiry committee for probe. It will be led by a Grade-21 officer and include two deputy inspector generals (DIGs) as well as the Sanghar SSP.
Pakistan has long been considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists, according to international media watchdogs. Reporters in the country often face threats, harassment, and violence related to their work.
Police have not yet confirmed whether Husain’s death was linked to his profession.
