DP World, a global logistics services provider and K-Electric, Pakistan's largest power utility company, will build a power station at Karachi's Port Qasim to meet it future electricity needs and expand cargo operations.
The two companies have signed an agreement to build a dedicated 132 kV grid station at the Qasim International Container Terminal (QICT). The power station will ensure a reliable and efficient 26-megawatt power supply to support the terminal’s growing operations.
“Port Qasim is one of Pakistan’s most vital trade gateways, and reliable energy is the backbone of its continued growth. This partnership with K-Electric to install a dedicated grid station strengthens our terminal’s resilience and supports our goal of enabling more sustainable trade across Pakistan and beyond,” said Junaid Zamir, who heads DP World’s operations at QICT.
The grid station will support the terminal's expanding operations and ensure uninterrupted power for trade, the power utility company said in a statement.
Port Qasim is located on Karachi's creek in the Indus delta region. The port started operation in 1980 and currently has 18 berths with an annual handling capacity of 89 million tons. It has the capacity to handle vessels carrying oil, edible oil, coal, grains, cement, fertlizer, general cargo and LNG.
