Karachi’s Lady Dufferin Hospital is more than just the city’s first maternity home; it is the legacy of a movement that empowered women and saved countless lives.

Established under the Countess of Dufferin Fund in 1885, it became a milestone in South Asia’s medical history, offering women access to healthcare at a time when cultural barriers kept them away from hospitals.

It was here that women were trained as doctors, nurses, and midwives for the very first time, opening doors of the medical profession for generations to come.

From saving mothers and newborns in the 19th century to becoming part of Pakistan’s political history when Benazir Bhutto gave birth to her son here in 1988, Lady Dufferin Hospital remains a living symbol of women’s empowerment and medical progress. Nukta Correspondent Shayan Saleem visited the hospital and brought us this short documentary. Watch now!
