A child has died and four other people were injured after the roof of a school collapsed near Women's College Road in the Baghbanpura area of Lahore on Wednesday, Rescue 1122 said.
Emergency services said their control room received a call reporting that a wall of the school building, where construction work was also underway, had collapsed. Rescue teams were dispatched immediately and reached the site shortly after the alert was received.
What caused the school roof collapse in Lahore?
The building was three stories high, with construction work underway on the third floor. The third floor suddenly collapsed, sending debris crashing down onto the ground floor and into the adjoining street. A summer camp was in session at the school when the collapse occurred.
How many people were injured in the collapse?
Rescue teams pulled four injured people from the rubble and transported them to hospital, where they are receiving treatment. A child caught in the collapse died from injuries sustained in the incident. A rescue operation remains ongoing at the site.
Is this linked to another recent building collapse in Lahore?
The incident comes days after the roof of a tuition center in Lahore's Kahna Nau area collapsed on Tuesday, killing 14 children.
That collapse occurred in the Qurban School area near Ferozepur Road, where the roof of a room at the tuition center gave way, trapping several children beneath the debris.
The two incidents are separate, but both have renewed scrutiny of building safety standards in Lahore.
What other storm damage was reported in Punjab?
The Baghbanpura collapse came amid a wider spell of heavy rain and windstorms across Punjab. Rescue Punjab spokesperson Farooq Ahmed said two people were killed and nine others injured province-wide over the past 24 hours in incidents involving collapsed walls, roofs and billboards.
In Attock, two people died and three were injured when a wall collapsed near a fuel pump amid strong winds and rain. A separate roof collapse in Attock's Para Shaheen Bagh area left three people injured.
In Khushab's Qaidabad area, one person was injured after being struck by lightning. In Sargodha, a signboard collapse caused by strong winds and rain injured one person. In Sheikhupura, a wooden roof collapse on Chak Rasala Road left one person injured.
The spokesperson said all seriously injured victims were given immediate first aid and shifted to nearby hospitals. Rescue Punjab urged citizens to dial the emergency helpline 1122 in case of any emergency.
