A Pakistani man set himself on fire on Tuesday at the Lahore High Court (LHC) over a long-running employment dispute. He survived after police and rescue officials intervened and rushed him to the hospital.

The man, identified as Asif Javed from Khanewal, had filed a petition in the LHC challenging his termination from a private company in 2016. His case was being heard by Justice Shujat Ali Khan.

Javed was reportedly frustrated with the delay in his case, which has been in court since 2020. After a brief hearing, the LHC postponed proceedings until April 8. Shortly after, Javed attempted self-immolation within the court premises.

According to court records, a labor court had declared Javed’s dismissal unlawful in 2019 and ordered his reinstatement.

The company challenged this ruling before the National Industrial Relations Commission, which rejected their appeal in 2020. The company then filed a case in the LHC, where it remains pending.

Police and rescue officials acted swiftly, rescuing him and transferring him to Mayo Hospital for treatment.

Punjab Inspector General (IG) Dr Usman Anwar later visited the hospital, where he met Javed and his family, inquired about his condition, and assured them of justice.

He also visited the Lahore High Court, inspected the site of the attempted self-immolation, and directed authorities to tighten security measures.

Officials have assured Javed’s family that he will receive the best possible medical care while his case continues in court.
