A key suspect involved in the assault of a biker in Karachi’s upscale Defence Housing Authority (DHA) has been arrested, a day after a video showing the incident went viral and drew widespread condemnation on social media.
The incident occurred on Sunday night (June 1) in DHA’s Khayaban-e-Ittehad area. According to details, the biker, who was riding with his sister, accidentally collided with a vehicle owned by the suspect.
The car owner, identified as Salman Farooqui, exited his vehicle accompanied by several men traveling in his other jeep. The group began assaulting the biker, slapping him repeatedly despite the victim’s sister pleading for mercy on his behalf. The attack was witnessed by numerous bystanders and was captured on video, which soon went viral on social media, prompting widespread calls for justice.
Talking to Nukta, SSP South Mehzore Ali confirmed Farooqui’s arrest. He explained that police utilized geo-fencing and other technical methods to locate and detain the suspect. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack and questioning Farooqui to understand the events leading up to the assault.
Following the viral video, police raided Farooqui’s residence, but he had already fled. During the raid, two household staff members - the driver and security guard - were detained for questioning.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Zafar Iqbal earlier told Nuktathat no formal complaint had been filed initially. The police acted after the video went viral. Efforts were underway to contact the victims, believed to reside in the city’s Ranchore Line area, but no direct communication had been established before the suspect’s arrest.
Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took notice of the case and directed law enforcement to ensure the prompt arrest of those responsible and the swift delivery of justice.
