Residents and visitors in the United Arab Emirates are being urged by medical professionals to take precautions against the scorching summer heat, as temperatures inch closer to a staggering 50 degree Celsius. The National Centre of Meteorology recorded the hottest day of the year last week, with the mercury reaching a scorching 49.9 degree Celsius.

With the arrival of the peak summer season, medics advise people to stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day whenever possible and to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

What happens during a heatwave?

Heatwaves significantly increase your risk of heatstroke. Heatstroke is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body's temperature rises above 40 degree Celsius (104°Fahrenheit), and is a serious risk associated with exerting oneself in hot and humid environments. Symptoms of heatstroke can include confusion, seizures, or even loss of consciousness. If left untreated, heatstroke can lead to organ failure, coma, or even death.

Which brings us to Saudi Arabia

Following a heatwave that tragically claimed the lives of nearly 1,300 pilgrims during Hajj this year, Saudi Arabia is bracing for another surge in temperatures. A climate expert has warned that the Kingdom could see highs exceeding 50 degrees Celsius in late July and early August.

The Saudi Health Ministry confirmed the death toll from the recent heatwave, which struck during the peak of Hajj. Many of the victims were reportedly unauthorized pilgrims who lacked proper shelter and hydration in the extreme heat.

Reportedly, the heatwave shattered temperature records in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq too. Thermometers soared above a staggering 50 degrees Celsius, making even basic outdoor activity dangerous.
