Noreen Niazi, a sister of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, was allowed into Rawalpindi's Adiala jail on Tuesday to meet him, after the Supreme Court ordered that the former premier be permitted weekly family meetings.

She was the only one of Khan's sisters allowed to proceed after police stopped others at a nearby checkpoint.

Why was Noreen Niazi allowed to meet Imran Khan at Adiala jail?

Noreen Niazi was granted entry to Adiala jail after the Supreme Court ordered that Khan be permitted weekly meetings with his family. Police had initially stopped her along with Khan's other sisters, Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan, at Dahgal Naka, a checkpoint on Adiala Road, before allowing only Noreen to proceed.

The development came after months of restrictions on visits to Khan, despite an Islamabad High Court order allowing him to meet his family, lawyers and associates twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Before entering the prison, Noreen told reporters she would brief Khan on the Supreme Court's order directing that he be moved to Islamabad's Shifa International Hospital for a medical examination.

What did Khan's family say outside Adiala jail?

Noreen also said she would inform Khan of efforts made by members of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party on his behalf. Speaking at the checkpoint, Aleema called for bail for both Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, saying the Supreme Court's hospital order followed months of demands by the family and PTI.

"Politics does not trump health," Aleema said, adding that the sisters' primary concern was Khan's wellbeing. She said the court's decision showed that legal relief was possible, arguing that if Khan had received relief, the cases against Bushra Bibi should also be reconsidered.

What is Imran Khan currently serving time for?

Khan, who has been imprisoned since August 2023, is serving a 14-year sentence in the £190 million Al-Qadir Trust corruption case. He has faced several convictions since his removal as prime minister in 2022, many of which his party says are politically motivated.

Despite the courts' orders on prison meetings, Khan's access to visitors has been restricted for several months, according to his party and family. Aleema said the family would not speak to reporters after leaving the prison, citing court restrictions on their interaction with the media.
