Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar spoke by phone with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday, with both leaders reaffirming support for the Iran-US peace process and reviewing progress from the first round of high-level talks held at Burgenstock under the joint mediation of Pakistan and Qatar.
What did Dar and Wang Yi discuss about the Iran-US peace process?
Dar briefed Wang Yi on progress made during the Burgenstock talks, including the establishment of a high-level committee to oversee the mediation process under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
Three dedicated working groups have been formed to address key issues: the nuclear file, sanctions, and mechanisms for monitoring and dispute resolution.
Dar said the working groups are expected to facilitate negotiations and help the parties reach a final agreement within the next 60 days.
How did China respond to Pakistan's mediation role?
Wang Yi congratulated Pakistan's leadership on the successful mediation that led to the signing of the Islamabad MoU, commending Pakistan's "persistent engagement, active diplomacy, and constructive role in promoting peace and stability through dialogue."
China has described the Islamabad pact as sending a "positive signal" and said it should be jointly safeguarded and implemented. Wang Yi reaffirmed Beijing's commitment to resolving disputes through peaceful means in accordance with the principles of the U.N. Charter.
The two foreign ministers agreed to continue close coordination in support of a negotiated settlement between Iran and the United States.
What Pakistani and Chinese peace frameworks were discussed?
Dar expressed appreciation for China's consistent support for the peace initiative, highlighting President Xi Jinping's four-point peace proposal and the five-point Pakistan-China peace initiative as important contributions to the diplomatic process.
Pakistan's Foreign Office said Islamabad extended its "sincere appreciation" to all countries and partners who expressed support for its peace efforts.
Both sides expressed hope that the ongoing process would bring a permanent end to hostilities and pave the way for lasting peace and shared development in the region.
