Pakistan’s federal government debt increased by an average of about PKR 16.2 billion a day over the past year, reaching PKR 81.935 trillion at the end of May 2026, according to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan.

The central government’s debt stood at PKR 81.935 trillion in May, up 7.8% from a year earlier and slightly higher than PKR 81.930 trillion recorded in April, reflecting a 0.02% month-on-month increase.

State Bank data showed the federal debt stock increased by approximately PKR 5.93 trillion over the 12 months through May, equivalent to roughly PKR 16.23 billion per day.

Domestic debt rose 8.7% from a year earlier to PKR 58.107 trillion in May 2026.

Within domestic debt, long-term public debt increased to PKR 47.297 trillion from PKR 45.263 trillion a year earlier, while short-term debt rose to PKR 10.734 trillion from PKR 8.133 trillion.

Separately, the central bank's weekly monetary survey showed broad money (M2) expanded 9.2%, or PKR 3.726 trillion, between July 1 and June 12 of fiscal year 2025-26, compared with growth of 7.1%, or PKR 2.546 trillion, during the same period a year earlier.

Net foreign assets of the banking system increased by PKR 1.670 trillion, compared with an increase of PKR 1.398 trillion in the corresponding period last year. Net domestic assets rose by PKR 2.055 trillion, compared with PKR 1.148 trillion a year earlier.

Government borrowing for budgetary support totaled PKR 1.797 trillion during the period, significantly lower than PKR 3.212 trillion recorded in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.

Private sector borrowing, however, increased to PKR 873.3 billion from PKR 676.6 billion in the same period last year, reflecting stronger demand for credit from businesses, according to State Bank data.
