Pakistan has embarked on an ambitious project to construct the country's largest nuclear power plant, Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit-5 (C-5).

The foundation-laying ceremony is set to take place on Monday, according to a press release from the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives.

This milestone marks a significant step forward in Pakistan's energy sector, bolstered by the enduring partnership between Pakistan and China.

The C-5 plant, with a generation capacity of 1,200 megawatts, is being developed with Chinese assistance, similar to the other six operational nuclear power plants in Pakistan.

The Chashma Nuclear Power Generating Station (CNPGS) site is home to four existing plants: C-1 and C-2, each with a capacity of 325 megawatts, and C-3 and C-4, each producing 340 megawatts, according to the ministry's press release.

Meanwhile, the Karachi Nuclear Power Generating Station (KNPGS) comprises two plants, K-2 and K-3, with a combined generation capacity of 2,200 megawatts.

Collectively, Pakistan's six nuclear power plants, operated by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, have a total capacity of 3,530 megawatts, according to the press release.

The construction of C-5 follows the issuance of licenses by the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority and the laying of the foundation stone by the prime minister on July 14, 2023.

These nuclear facilities are renowned for their robust safety mechanisms, reliability, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness, courtesy of their zero carbon emissions, the press release added.
