Agency says action will be taken against all those responsible

Fabricated letter from UAE Embassy also surfaced on social media

Pakistan's cybercrime investigators have launched a probe into artificially generated videos that falsely depict Punjab's first female Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz hugging United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during his diplomatic visit last week.

The Federal Investigation Agency's Cybercrime Wing has identified 10 social media accounts as key sources behind the spread of these fake visuals, which were allegedly aimed at tarnishing the reputations of both figures. The agency revealed that these accounts were used to upload misleading content, contributing to the dissemination of negative propaganda.

The investigation was launched following a source report, which led to the identification of the accounts in question. FIA officials confirmed that a detailed scrutiny of these accounts is currently underway.

The controversy erupted shortly after Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, accompanied by a delegation, arrived in Pakistan on a private visit last Sunday. Upon his arrival in Rahim Yar Khan, Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz, along with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, welcomed the UAE leader. During the visit, a handshake between the two leaders was captured in a photograph, sparking debate about diplomatic protocol and religious customs.

However, soon after the images were shared publicly, false AI-generated content began circulating on social media, fueling false narratives. Some videos, which received millions of views before being removed, appeared to show fabricated hugs between the leaders. As a result, the FIA was prompted to act swiftly.

Additionally, a fabricated letter, purportedly from the UAE Embassy, surfaced on social media, demanding that the Pakistani government take immediate action against the ongoing propaganda targeting Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed and his interaction with Maryam Nawaz.

The FIA has vowed to take stringent action against those responsible for the malicious content and warned of the legal consequences for spreading fake news and misinformation. The agency's investigation continues as officials work to track down and hold accountable those behind the online smear campaign.
