Pakistan’s armed forces on Friday marked the seventh anniversary of Operation Swift Retort, paying tribute to the professionalism, courage, and sacrifices of military personnel involved in the 2019 aerial operation against India.
The operation, carried out by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) on February 27, 2019, came in response to Indian air strikes near Balakot following the Pulwama attack in Indian-administered Kashmir earlier that month. During the engagement, Pakistani jets shot down two Indian aircraft. One Indian pilot was captured in Pakistan and later returned to India as a gesture of de-escalation.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defense Staff; Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Chief of Naval Staff; and Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, Chief of Air Staff, jointly honored personnel for their operational excellence and steadfastness.
Operation Swift Retort
The operation was launched a day after heightened cross-border tensions. Pakistani officials have described it as a measured, proportionate response to what they termed “unprovoked aggression” by India. The PAF targeted non-military sites across the Line of Control to demonstrate capability while avoiding civilian casualties.
Operation Swift Retort is frequently cited by Pakistani authorities as a demonstration of joint operational readiness and strategic deterrence amid the volatile security environment between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
Renewed commitment to security
In messages marking the anniversary, Pakistan’s military leadership reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The service chiefs emphasized that the armed forces remain vigilant and prepared to respond decisively to any threat.
The leadership also reiterated Pakistan’s long-standing call for regional peace and stability while stressing that any acts of aggression would be met with a firm response.
