Pakistan's coalition government and senior leaders of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on Wednesday held pre-budget consultations in Islamabad, discussing development spending, expenditure priorities, and economic planning ahead of the federal budget for FY2026-27.
The participants also agreed to recommend June 10, 2026, as the date for the presentation of the federal budget.
When will Pakistan present the FY2026-27 federal budget?
The government and PPP leaders agreed to recommend to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif that the FY2026-27 federal budget be presented on June 10, 2026.
The proposed date comes as coalition partners continue consultations on spending priorities, development allocations and broader economic planning before the budget's formal announcement.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb chaired the meeting, which was part of the government's routine engagement with coalition partners ahead of the budget.
What was discussed during the government-PPP budget meeting?
According to an official statement, participants reviewed both current and development expenditures, including allocations under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP). The discussions also covered broader economic priorities for the upcoming fiscal year.
The meeting focused on measures aimed at supporting fiscal sustainability, public welfare, development initiatives, and inclusive economic growth during FY2026-27.
Coalition partners exchanged views on how spending priorities should be aligned with the government's economic objectives.
Why are pre-budget consultations important?
Pre-budget consultations allow the government to seek input from coalition partners before finalizing key fiscal decisions. The process helps build consensus on expenditure plans, development projects, and economic priorities ahead of the budget's presentation in parliament.
The consultations come as the government works to finalize its fiscal framework for the next financial year while balancing development needs with efforts to maintain economic stability and sustainable public finances.
Who attended the budget consultation meeting?
Among those attending the meeting were Murad Ali Shah, Naveed Qamar, Sherry Rehman, Saleem Mandviwala, and Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro.
Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Bajwa, Finance Secretary Imdadullah Bosal, Federal Board of Revenue Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial, and other senior government officials also participated in the discussions.
The consultation is part of the government's broader effort to complete preparations for the FY2026-27 budget while advancing development goals, welfare measures, and long-term fiscal sustainability.
