PCB seeks assurance on hybrid model for all ICC events as BCCI stands firm against its use in India
The Emirates Cricket Board is prepared to make arrangements for hosting India’s Champions Trophy matches once the dispute is resolved.
The hybrid model appears to be the most viable solution for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which Pakistan is scheduled to host February 19 to March 9.
However, there remains uncertainty surrounding the details of the fusion formula proposed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for a more sustainable resolution. The PCB’s primary objective is to ensure that all ICC events hosted by Pakistan and India over the next three years follow a hybrid model.
A major challenge lies in India’s acceptance of this model. According to sources, significant progress may be achieved soon through backdoor diplomacy.
Sources added that India opposes the hybrid format for ICC events it will host in the future, arguing that it is a secure country with no justification for adopting such a model. India is only willing to have its Champions Trophy matches held under the hybrid model, with the UAE as the designated venue.

Meanwhile, the PCB has requested a written assurance from the ICC to ensure the hybrid model applies to ICC events in India. The PCB believes that if India refuses to play in Pakistan, then Pakistan should reciprocate by not playing in India, advocating for an equitable approach.
But well-connected sources told this correspondent that it is confirmed that Champions Trophy will be held in Pakistan but India would play it's matches in the UAE.
ICC under pressure
The ICC’s new chairman, Jay Shah, faces pressure as he cannot oppose the stance of the ruling BJP government in India.
Shah’s father, Amit Shah, a key BJP figure and India’s Home Minister, is also close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Consequently, the BCCI has delegated the Champions Trophy decision entirely to the Indian government.
Sources told Nukta that Jay Shah is attempting to persuade the PCB that India is a safe host, arguing against applying the hybrid model for ICC events in India over the next three years.
"India would not play it's matches on neutral venues in the ICC events which will be held in India. It's all about money and India is matchless in generating huge revenue," the source said.
The next few hours are critical, as significant developments regarding the Champions Trophy are anticipated.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan’s Interior Minister, has consulted with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, who expressed confidence in Naqvi’s handling of the issue during ICC meetings.
Preparations for the Champions Trophy venues are also underway. Renovation of the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore is expected to be completed by December 31, while work on Karachi’s National Bank Stadium is nearing completion. Most of the Gaddafi Stadium has been rebuilt, enhancing its appearance and increasing its capacity.
This will mark Pakistan’s first time hosting an ICC event in 28 years, the last being the 1996 World Cup, co-hosted with India and Sri Lanka.
