Pakistan hospital says CT scanner functional amid questions over Imran's heart scan

Pakistan's PIMS hospital said on Tuesday that its CT scanner remains functional, days after jailed former premier Imran Khan was unable to undergo a recommended heart scan during a visit to the Islamabad facility, prompting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to order an inquiry into the omission.

Is PIMS' CT scanner functional?

Yes. PIMS says the CT machine, installed in 2022, "remains functional and continues to support diagnostic services."

It added that imaging tests are conducted based on clinical assessment, specialist advice, patient-safety considerations and established medical protocols, and that use of a particular imaging procedure should be considered in its clinical context.

Why was Imran Khan's heart scan not carried out?

The statement came as questions continued over why Imran did not receive a CT coronary angiography (CTA), which doctors had recommended during his visit for an eye procedure and other diagnostic tests. He underwent other examinations before being returned to Adiala Jail without the CTA.

The scan can help identify coronary artery blockages and assess the risk of cardiac complications. The episode prompted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to order an inquiry after reports said the facility needed for the scan was unavailable.

What is PTI demanding over Imran Khan's medical treatment?

The controversy has renewed PTI's demand that Imran be moved to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad. The Supreme Court had directed on August 18 that he be shifted there for medical treatment.

PTI on Tuesday refiled a contempt petition in the Supreme Court over the medical treatment being provided to Imran. His sister, Uzma Khan, had initially filed the petition, alleging that authorities had failed to comply with the court's directive to transfer him to Shifa International Hospital. The petition was resubmitted after court officials raised administrative objections earlier in the day.

The petitioner has asked the Supreme Court to appoint a local commission or designate a judicial officer to oversee implementation of its earlier order.
